Borama is the capital of the Awdal region in Somaliland, situated in a mountainous area near the border with Ethiopia. Surrounded by green hills and cool highlands, Borama combines natural beauty with a spirit of progress.
The city serves as a hub for commerce, education, and community development in the region.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, Borama was a significant center of the Adal Sultanate, a powerful medieval Muslim kingdom. Archaeological evidence from this period includes the remains of houses, mosques, and tombs
Following the collapse of Somalia's central government and the end of the civil war, Borama hosted a pivotal Grand Conference of National Reconciliation in 1993. This event was essential to the creation of modern Somaliland and is often favorably compared to other peace initiatives in the region.
Amidst the civil war in the early 1990s, when much of the Somali-speaking regions descended into factional fighting, Borama was notable for its stability. The city and its inhabitants were pioneers of a self-help scheme that restored order and infrastructure
Borama has earned a reputation as the "City of Education" due to its strong focus on learning and academic excellence. Institutions like Amoud University and Eelo Academy have served as engines of intellectual growth, contributing to the development of Borama and the wider Somali community.
